Grade Five Math Minimize

Welcome to Conneaut Grade Five Math Web Page

...a work in progress.

Unit One Everyday Math Minimize

1.2 Rectangular Arrays

Math Mayhem get practice Multiplying, Dividing, Adding, Subtracting

1.3 Factors

The Grid Game is great practice for factors.

Product Game is great practice for factor and multiples.

1.4 Factor Captor

This Factor Captor Game has a little twist in its rules compared to what we learned but stresses the same concept.

1.5 Divisibility

We focus on determining if numbers are divisible by 2, 3, 5, 6, 9, or 10.  Click here for a website that reviews divisibility rules, has flash cards of rules and a word search of key divisibility terms.

1.6 Prime and Composite Numbers

1.7 Square Numbers

1.8 Unsquaring Numbers

1.9 Factor Strings and Prime Factorization

1.10 Progress Check

Unit Two Everyday Math Minimize

2.2 Addition of Whole Numbers and Decimals (line them up, bring it down)

I typically stick with "Old School" addition as the method of choice.  I will show Partial Sums as a way to explain why we carry numbers over into the next column.  Partial Sums works best with whole numbers.  When getting into decimals when adding (or subtracting) partial sums becomes quite confusing for 5th graders.

2.3 Subtraction of Whole Numbers and Decimals

Trade First method video (This video includes partial sums)

2.4 Addition and Subtraction Number Stories

2.6 Chance Events (probability)

2.7 Estimating Products

2.8 Multiplication of Whole Numbers and Decimals

2.9 The Lattice Method of Multiplication

    Coral's Video shows lattice multiplication

2.10 Comparing Millions, Billions, and Trillions

2.11 Progress Check

3.5 Using a Compass

3.6 Congruent Triangles  Brainpop-Triangles

3.7 Properties of Polygons  Brainpop- Polygons

3.8 Regular Tesselations

3.9 Angles of Polygons

3.11 Progress Check

Unit Four- Division Minimize

Division- Brainpop

4.1 Division Facts

Introduction to Map Scale and Using Scales

4.4 Partial Quotient Algorithm Strategies

4.5 Division of Decimal Numbers

4.6 Interpreting the Remainder

Unit Five- Fractions Minimize

5.1 Fraction Review- Practice Adding, Subtracting, Multiplying fractions with Soccer Shootout.

Fractions Mystery Picture Game allows users to practice finding fractional parts of numbers.
5.2 Mixed Numbers
5.3 Comparing and Ordering Fractions- Fresh Baked Fractions allows users to practice finding equivalent fractions
5.4 Two Rules for Equivalent Fractions
5.5-5.7 Fractions and Decimals Parts 1-3- The Interactive Fraction bar allows users to compare fractions, decimals and percents.  Practice rounding decimal numbers/whole numbers here (I recommend the matching game). Solve various problems involving giving a tip to the Penguin Waiter.
5.8 Using a Calculator to Convert Fractions to a Percent- (However, 5th graders are not allowed to use calculators on the OAT)
5.9 Bar and Circle Graphs-
