1st - We reviewed yesterday's discussion of the essay topic, then made thesis statements to fit the topic. After a thesis statement check, students looked for the rest of the quotes they need for this comparison essay. Then we copied the quotes as a group and briefly discussed topic sentences.

1st – We reviewed the short story comparison sheets and decided on a topic for the comparison essay: the similarities and differences of the main characters’ determination in “The Censors” and “Through the Tunnel.” We then started filling out this essay writing guide and ended while looking for quotes to support our main idea.

1st - We discussed inequality in South Africa while analyzing the inequality graph on this web-page. Then, we watched this video on current equality struggles in South Africa and completed this viewing guide while watching it. Then, we reviewed our viewing guide responses as a class, defined a ‘ha’penny’ together, and read the short story “Ha’Penny.” Students then divided into four groups and analyzed different aspects of “Ha’Penny.” Students will continue working in groups and share tomorrow.
5th and 7th-Students compared their summaries to the provided example. Then, the completed textbook questions towards "Glass of Milk." Literary Focus: #1,2,3,5 on page 617; Reading Strategy: #2,5; and Critical Thinking: 4, 5 on page 616.

1st-Students finished reading the exerpt from Farewell to Manzanar. Then, they worked with a partner to complete a handout that compares this reading to Night.

5th-I checked Chapter 4 questions for Night and we discussed the answers. Then, we discussed the Japanese Internment camps and I showed a You tube clip. Then, we started to read an excerpt from Farewell to Manzanar to look for similarities between the two readings.
